From the 18th to the 31st of december 2008, digital imagery will get place of choice in the artistic landscape in Paris. The Grand Palais will showcase 10 years of digital creations, artistic innovations originated from 27 countries across the Europe featuring artists such as Thierry Kuntzel, Bob Wilson, Bill Viola, William Klein, Michael Snow and William Kentridge…

This event called «Dans la nuit, des images» -literrally “Night shots”- is the result of a partnership in between Le Fresnoy and the French Culture Ministry. Le Fresnoy could be described as an incubator for digital artists. Over these 14 nights, the exhibit will showcase pictures, movies, videos, digital creations and interactive booths reflecting the ever-expanding artistic community leveraging digital medias. Artists have been increasingly using technology to create, change, express their thoughts. This trend is not new in any way, that said, the last 10 years have seen a number of new digital artists arising. Call it the internet generation, call it IT democracy; fact is nowadays art is both accessible and generated by the masses.

Le Fresnoy selected 140 masterpieces among this European-scale show. Some of these will be made public for the first time. Some will be beamed to the ground -so wanderers are part of the video-, some on the walls, on the glass ceiling… what’s more ? Even the outside walls of the Grand Palais will be used as a monumental display through out the festive period.

I absolutely recommend this event. It’s free, it’s in a unique place and it’s something you won’t really see anywhere else !
