sailor chic in Paris
This original exhibition highlights the influence of naval uniforms on french fashion. Rare pieces from the collection of the Musée National de la Marine in Paris and the repository of the Commissariat de la Marine in Toulon will rub shoulders with iconic creations by leading French couturiers. Restyled and reinvented, from 1840 to the present day, naval uniforms have made the move from gangplank to catwalk. This exhibition gives prideof place to a selection of exceptional outfits by couturiers from Jeanne Lanvin to Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Diior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and many others. Each bears witness to the endless influence which sailor style has on fashion. This exhibition presents 35 unforgettable outfits, staged on a sumptuous catwalk. As a backdrop to this fashion show, the main element of a sailor’s uniform are set out in dressing-rooms, alongside the designer clothes and accessories they have inspired. The exhibition also highlights four “sailor figures” through film footage, literature, photographs, paintings, prints and posters : the ideal sailor, the adventurer, the troublemaker and the tattooed mariner.
